Parenting

  • You have a new baby in the family who has been identified as having a disability and your family will have many questions and concerns. There are many different emotional and practical considerations. Each family and parent will respond in a different way; each will be looking for support and information. A loving safe family environment gives children the best possible start to their learning. Parenting is a series of trials and errors, with no definite rules. It is often a question of finding what works for you and your children. Time and practice are important. Have fun with your kids. Enjoy time playing, reading, talking, walking and learning together. The Ministry of Education programme Parents as First Teachers (PAFT) is based on the philosophy that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers. PAFT provides free, practical help from before your baby is born until your child’s first birthday. IHC is committed to enhancing support for all disabled children and their families.
